Polignano a Mare
History
The oldest nucleus of the town stands on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Adriatic Sea 33 kilometers south of Bari. Of great naturalistic interest are its sea caves and historically important are the historical center and the remains of Roman domination. Among the latter, the via Traiana bridge, which can still be traveled, which crosses Lama Monachile. Since 2008, Polignano a Mare has always received the Blue Flag, recognition conferred by the “Foundation for Environmental Education” to European coastal resorts that meet quality criteria relating to bathing water parameters and the service offered in relation to parameters such as cleaning the beaches and tourists landings. Here was born the famous singer Domenico Modugno “mister volare” to whom a large statue on the waterfront is dedicated.
