Ostuni

The white village

Ostuni

History

The most peculiar characteristic of the historic center, which so greatly fascinates tourists, is the limewashing of the houses up to the roofs. The use, attested since the Middle Ages, derives not only from the easy availability of lime as a raw material, but also from the need to ensure greater brightness in the alleys and narrow medieval-style rooms, given by both direct and reflected light.
This practice meant that Ostuni was called White City or Nativity Scene City, a characteristic that made it recognizable and unforgettable for visitors.
Blue Flag and five sails of Legambiente has approximately 31 thousand inhabitants. Ostuni stands on three hills at a height of 218 meters above sea level. It is located 8 km from the Adriatic coast.
